  • Tap Test: Pot, Box or Towel (cause and effect, 3–8 minutes): Set an upside-down pot, an empty box and a folded towel in a row on the floor.
  • Turn-to-Fit Slot Box (shape sorting, 5–12 minutes): Open the box together at the end and tip everything out to start again.
  • Box Lid Ramp Races (cause and effect, 5–15 minutes): Prop one end of a flattened box on a cushion to make a low ramp on the floor.
  • Teddy's Cardboard Box Car (simple pretend play, 5–12 minutes): Put teddy in the open box and say "Teddy's car! Beep beep."
  • Which Hole Fits? (problem solving, 5–10 minutes): Set an empty tissue box and an open cardboard box side by side.
  • Kick into the Box Goal (kicking a ball, 5–12 minutes): Lay the box on its side and put the ball two steps in front of it.
  • Cardboard Box Circle and Square (shape sorting, 5–10 minutes): Cut one round and one square hole in the top of the box, each just bigger than the ball and the blocks.
  • Cardboard Garage Parking Talk (two-word phrases, 5–15 minutes): Cut two or three doorways in the side of a box to make a garage.
  • Clothespin-Knob Box Puzzle (knob puzzles, 5–10 minutes): Cut a circle and a square, each palm-size or bigger, out of a box lid and clip a clothespin on each as a knob.
  • Box Drum Copy-the-Beat (making music, 3–8 minutes): Sit facing each other with the box between you.
  • Picture-Label Toy Homes (tidying up, 5–10 minutes): Draw a quick picture of each toy group on a sticky note and stick one on each box.
  • Under, Over, Through Car Roads (spatial words, 8–15 minutes): Open both ends of the box for a tunnel and lay the cardboard strip across two blocks for a bridge.

  • Knock-Knock Box House (asking questions, 5–15 minutes): Cut a door flap in a cardboard box and hide a stuffed animal inside while your child looks away.
