Caregiver split: two working parents and a grandparent

Both parents work away from home: one does the wake-up and breakfast, a grandparent covers the working day including the nap, and the other parent takes the evening. 2 handoffs at 25 months:

  • 8:30 am, Parent to Grandparent: the child has been awake 1 h 45 min, with 4 h to go until the nap.
  • 5:30 pm, Grandparent to Partner: the child has been awake 3 h 15 min, with 2 h to go until bedtime; dinner is at 5:30 pm, so say what was already eaten.

How 25 months differs from 24 and 26 months

If your child falls asleep easily earlier than this sample's bedtime, keep the earlier time; there is no need to stretch the evening to match the clock.

Compared with the 24-month sample: the nap starts earlier by 15 min, wake-up is earlier by 15 min, bedtime is earlier by 15 min and lunch is earlier by 15 min.

Looking ahead to 26 months: wake-up is later by 15 min and bedtime is later by 15 min.

The 8 activities in this 25-month day

Active picks sit in the outdoor stretches, calm ones before sleep and a self-care skill at the main meals.

  • 7:45 am, parent: Dough Pancake Press

Calm, a new domain for the day (fine motor). Give your child a ball of dough and squeeze one of your own: "Squish!" Pat yours flat with your palm and wait to see if your child copies. Respond to whatever they do, poking, pulling or patting: "You poked a hole!" Words to model: squish, flat, poke. Watch for: squeezes the dough with the whole hand. Safety: Stay close and keep the dough out of the mouth; homemade dough is very salty, so keep it away from pets too.

  • 9:45 am, grandparent: Long Stick, Short Stick

Active and outdoors: the core of the 9:45-11:15 am stretch. It is also in the 24-month sample day; if the basic version is easy by 25 months, change one thing: ask 'Which is the long one?' and wait for a point. Watch for: lines up stick ends when comparing. Words to model: short, longer, stick. Safety: Leave small twigs, acorns, berries and mushrooms on the ground, and wash hands afterwards.

  • 11:15 am, grandparent: Climb the Stairs to Teddy

Active, a new domain for the day (gross motor). Sit the teddy on the third stair while your child watches: "Oh no, teddy is stuck up there!" Stand one step below and to the side, and say "Go get teddy." Offer your finger or guide their hand to the rail, then wait for them to lift a foot. Words to model: up, step, hold on. Watch for: walks up instead of crawling. Safety: Stay one step below your child within catching distance, and keep the stair gate closed outside practice.

  • 11:45 am, grandparent: Potato Scrub at the Basin

A mealtime skill practiced during lunch. Put the basin on a towel on the floor or a low table, with the colander beside it. Scrub one potato yourself and point out the dirt: "Dirty... scrub, scrub... clean!" Hand your child a potato and the sponge, then wait. Words to model: dirty, clean, scrub. Watch for: rubs more than one side of the potato. Safety: Stay within arm's reach of the water and empty the basin straight after.

  • 2:45 pm, grandparent: Bubble Wand Turns

Active and outdoors: the core of the 2:45-4:15 pm stretch. It is also in the 20-month and 21-month sample days; if the basic version is easy by 25 months, change one thing: let your child dip the wand while you hold the bottle steady. Watch for: waves the wand and watches for bubbles. Words to model: my turn, your turn, pop. Safety: Blow bubbles outdoors or over a towel, because spilled solution makes floors slippery.

  • 4:15 pm, grandparent: Teddy's Cardboard Box Car

Active, a new domain for the day (creativity & pretend). Put teddy in the open box and say "Teddy's car! Beep beep." Push the box a short way across the floor and stop: "Stop!" Step back and wait for your child to push it. Words to model: beep beep, go, stop. Watch for: pushes the box with teddy inside. Safety: Remove staples, plastic film and loose tape, and keep the route on a flat floor away from stairs.

  • 5:30 pm, partner: Small-Pitcher Pour at Snack

A mealtime skill practiced during dinner. It is also in the 24-month sample day; if the basic version is easy by 25 months, change one thing: put a little more water in the measuring cup. Watch for: pours most of the water into the cup. Words to model: slow, stop, full. Safety: Pouring and drinking both happen seated.

  • 6:00 pm, partner: Shopping Cart Spotter

Calm, a new domain for the day (language). Buckle your child into the cart seat. Slow down in one section, such as fruit, and watch where your child looks. Name what they look at or point to: "Bananas." Words to model: bananas, apples, in the cart. Watch for: points at foods and looks back at you. Safety: Keep your child buckled in the cart seat and never let them stand up in the cart.
