Summer ideas for 2-year-olds

Summer is the season of water, sand, shade and long light evenings, which gives a toddler big sensory play and plenty of words for hot, cold, wet and dry. Routines shift too: outdoor play moves to the cooler morning and late afternoon, and drinks, hats and shade become part of every outing. The 12 ideas below overlap the 24-36-month band, best fit for 2 years first.

How to do Pack the Beach Bag

Before an outing your child gathers the hat, towel, cup and spade on two-step directions and packs them, a real job that also previews the day ahead. Words to model: hat, in the bag, what else?, ready. Pack sunscreen, medicines and bottles with small caps yourself, out of reach.

  1. Hold the bag open and say 'we're going to the park, let's pack'.

  2. Give two-step directions: 'get your hat and put it in the bag'.

  3. Pause; if they stall, point to the item without saying more.

  4. Ask 'what else do we need?' and accept their ideas.

  5. Check the bag together before you leave: 'hat, towel, cup, ready'.

  • Beach Ball Toss and Count

You and your child toss a big beach ball back and forth, counting the throws together and taking one step back each time three in a row work. Ages 24-36 months, 5-12 min, outdoors. Start: stand close and show a two-hand toss: 'ready, throw!' Say: throw, catch, one, two, three. Safety: Play on grass away from water, roads and hard edges.

  • Sand Road and Tunnel for Cars

Your child draws a road in damp sand, helps dig a tunnel under a sand hill and drives a toy car through, using words for over, under and through. Ages 24-36 months, 8-20 min, outdoors. Start: pile up a sand hill together and pat it firm. Say: over, under, through. Safety: Check the sand for sharp objects and droppings first.

  • Squirt the Chalk Spots Away

Your child squeezes a bottle of water to wash chalk circles off a wall or path, building hand strength and aim while the colors run and vanish. Ages 20-26 months, 5-12 min, outdoors. Start: draw three big chalk circles low on a wall or on the path. Say: squeeze, squirt, gone. Safety: Use a clean bottle that never held cleaning products or chemicals.

  • Toes First at the Paddling Pool

At a paddling pool or calm water edge your child goes in one small step at a time while you name the feelings that come up, from worried to excited. Ages 24-36 months, 5-15 min, outdoors. Start: sit at the edge with your child and watch the water together first. Say: worried, excited, cold water. Safety: An adult stays within arm's reach every second: drowning is quick and silent.

  • Make Frozen Fruit Pops

Your child mashes ripe fruit, spoons it into an ice cube tray and checks on it after the nap, practicing spooning and seeing a change happen over time. Ages 24-36 months, 8-15 min, indoors. Start: peel and cut the fruit yourself, then let your child mash it with a fork in the bowl. Say: mash, spoon, cold. Safety: Use fruit only, with no added sugar, and remove pits and seeds.

  • Blanket Tent Camping Trip

Your child helps build a blanket tent, then acts out a summer camping trip with a pretend campfire, dinner and a sleeping bag, linking several steps into one story. Ages 26-36 months, 10-20 min, indoors or out. Start: drape the sheet over the chairs together and say 'let's go camping'. Say: tent, campfire, what next?. Safety: Keep the tent open at one end and never cover your child's face with the sheet.

Summer safety for 2-year-olds

Seasonal hazards first, then the precautions of the ideas on this page. Stay within arm's reach whenever water, food or small decorations are involved.

  • Drowning is fast and silent: an adult stays within arm's reach around paddling pools, pools, lakes, buckets and basins, and empties containers right after play.
  • Toddlers overheat and burn easily: plan outdoor play outside the hottest hours, use shade, hats, light clothing and a sunscreen made for children, and offer water often.
  • Never leave a child alone in a parked car, even for a minute, and keep the car locked so they cannot climb in.
  • Slides, sand, paving, metal buckles and water left in a hose can get hot enough to burn: touch them with your hand first.
  • Picnic foods such as whole grapes, cherry tomatoes, cherries with pits, hot dog rounds and popcorn are choking hazards: cut round foods lengthwise into small pieces and keep eating seated.
  • Pack sunscreen, medicines and bottles with small caps yourself, out of reach.
  • Play on grass away from water, roads and hard edges.
  • Check the sand for sharp objects and droppings first.
