You need

  • a large sheet of paper
  • a marker for the adult
  • 3 objects with different outlines: a wooden spoon, a measuring cup, a container lid

Steps

  1. Trace around a wooden spoon, a measuring cup and a lid on the paper, then tape the sheet down.
  2. Lay the spoon on its outline and say 'The spoon fits its shape.'
  3. Hand your child the lid and wait while they look for its outline.
  4. If they try the wrong outline, say 'Hmm, that's the spoon shape,' and pause again before pointing.
  5. Lift everything off and let them play again as many times as they want.

Safety first

  • Keep the marker in your hands and put it away after tracing; marker caps are a choking hazard.
  • Use only unbreakable, blunt kitchen objects bigger than a toilet-paper-tube opening.
How did it go?

Pick what you saw today; the next step for this activity appears below.

No level picked yet. The 0–4 scale is a learning log, not a test.

Not yet: show it once, then let them explore

Watch for the first sign: moves an object from outline to outline until it fits.

Not yet is information, not a verdict. Do it once yourself while they watch, pause, and offer it again in a few days.

Simplify one step

Next time: trace only two objects with very different outlines, such as the spoon and the lid.

Give the least help that works: wait first, then point or show, and guide hands only briefly.

Repeat the same version and fade your help

As you step back, watch for: places an object on its outline without help.

Pause a few seconds longer before you model, and swap showing it for a point or a gesture.

Offer it once more, then add one change

When it is easy again: add a fourth object.

Change only that one thing and keep everything else the same.

Ready for one step up

Add a fourth object. Or carry it somewhere new: put pots back in their usual spot on a low shelf while you tidy.

Starting it on their own or using it in a new place is the strongest sign. Still change one thing at a time.

Stop and rest this one

In 2-3 days, come back with the simpler version: trace only two objects with very different outlines, such as the spoon and the lid.

End with something calming together. One hard moment never means a delay.

Stop on a good note

Keep this version and keep it short next time: 5 minutes is plenty.

They can do it, but it was not fun today. Add difficulty only once it feels easy and enjoyable again.

  • Ask another caregiver to trace shoes or toys for the same game.

Words to model
