You need

  • 4-6 chunky toy cars in two clear colors
  • 2 sheets of paper in the same two colors
  • painter's tape

Steps

  1. Tape the two colored sheets to the floor a little apart, matching the colors your cars come in.
  2. Drive a red car onto the red sheet, 'Red car parks on red,' and do the same with a blue car.
  3. Hand your child a car and pause while they drive it somewhere.
  4. Name what happens: 'Blue car on blue!' or 'Red car on the blue lot. Where's red?'
  5. When the lots are full, drive every car out and start again.

Safety first

  • Use chunky toy cars with wheels that cannot come off, and check for loose parts first.
  • Peel the tape up after play so it cannot be torn off and chewed.

Not yet: show it once, then let them explore

Watch for the first sign: parks a car on the sheet of its color after your model.

Not yet is information, not a verdict. Do it once yourself while they watch, pause, and offer it again in a few days.

Simplify one step

Next time: use one sheet and cars of only that color, plus one very different car that parks 'at home'.

Give the least help that works: wait first, then point or show, and guide hands only briefly.

Repeat the same version and fade your help

As you step back, watch for: moves a car to the right sheet after a mix-up.

Pause a few seconds longer before you model, and swap showing it for a point or a gesture.

Offer it once more, then add one change

When it is easy again: stop parking the first car of each color and just say 'Cars park on their own color.'.

Change only that one thing and keep everything else the same.

Ready for one step up

Stop parking the first car of each color and just say 'Cars park on their own color.'. Or carry it somewhere new: sort blocks or cups by color into two bowls.

Starting it on their own or using it in a new place is the strongest sign. Still change one thing at a time.

Stop and rest this one

In 2-3 days, come back with the simpler version: use one sheet and cars of only that color, plus one very different car that parks 'at home'.

End with something calming together. One hard moment never means a delay.

Stop on a good note

Keep this version and keep it short next time: 5 minutes is plenty.

They can do it, but it was not fun today. Add difficulty only once it feels easy and enjoyable again.
